Value. Worth. Significance…Let’s consider a couple of quotes from a book that has been sitting on my bookshelf for years now.
EVERYONE needs to be loved. Valuable. Significant. But do we all know how to meet that need? Consider a couple of quotes from a book that has been sitting on my bookshelf for years now. It’s called The Search for Significance by Robert S. McGee. Recently I was drawn to pick it up to read. God’s timing is perfect.
“When the light does come on in our lives, we will discover that we have tried to meet certain needs in the wrong way, It isn’t that our needs are not real, it is just that we have tried to meet these needs in inappropriate ways.” Page 6
“Our desire to be loved and accepted is a symptom of a deeper need-the need that frequently governs our behavior and is the primary source of our emotional pain. Often unrecognized, this is our need for self-worth.” Page 7
Questions to contemplate:
- How can “light” enter our lives after a period of darkness?
- What are your unmet needs? Consider how you have tried to meet those needs in inappropriate ways.
- Think about a few ways that you have attempted to define your self-worth. Through accomplishments? Appearance? Wealth? Sex?
- What governs your behavior? Is it circumstances? Relationships? Substances?
